Viktoriia Denisova spoke at the Colloquia Logicae seminar
On November 27, Viktoriia Denisova made a presentation at the Colloquia Logicae seminar at Unicamp University, Brazil.
Viktoriia Denisova delivered a presentation entitled "The Drawbridges between Logic and Reasoning" at the Center for Logic, Epistemology and History of Science (CLE) of the University of Campinas (Unicamp) on the 27th of November. The talk, based on the book "Human Reasoning and Cognitive Science" by Keith Stenning and Michiel van Lambalgen, explored the intricate relationship between logic and human reasoning. Viktoriia discussed the contrasting views of scholars who consider logic as the foundation of rational thinking and those who argue that human reasoning is more complex than what formal logic can represent, emphasizing the importance of context, emotions, and individual experiences. She highlighted the distinction between "reasoning to interpretation" and "reasoning from interpretation," the authors' analysis of descriptive and deontic conditionals, and their critique of Gilbert Ryle's views on the nature of reasoning and inference. The presentation is also explored Stenning and van Lambalgen's formalization of reasoning based on "close-world semantics," an approach that aims to capture the context-sensitive and pragmatic aspects of human reasoning often overlooked in classical logical frameworks. By synthesizing these diverse perspectives, the presentation offered a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between logic and human reasoning, providing insights that can inform both logic and cognitive science research.
