Abstract

The paper analyses the problem of empty names in the context of fictive worlds and fictional entities. Arguments against the descriptive theory of reference are highlighted, showing its weaknesses in the semantic interpretation of fictional expressions, especially in the case of 'story within a story'. As an alternative solution to this problem, we propose a Direct reference theory that allows the description of utterances with empty names through the creation of ideal semantic models.

After a brief historical introduction to the problem of empty names and the theory of fiction, we will offer our solution to the "story within a story" case — Interfictional Reasoning Semantics (IRS). Using the machinery of hybrid logic, we will demonstrate a model for interfictional reasoning, its language, semantics, expressive capacities, weaknesses and strengths.
