Arkady Shaldov made a presentation on the topic of "The semantics of kind reference" at the seminar "From the logical point of view" on November 29.

Abstract

The talk concerns semantics of the kind-referring usage of nouns (as in The irbis inhabits Siberia). In the traditional, Neocarlsonian approach (Chierchia 1998) kind-level NPs are considered to refer to the maximal intensional individuals that correspond to the predicate. I will explore parallels between the kind-level and individual-level reference, problems of the Neocarlsonian approach and perspectives of a polymorphic analysis of kind reference.
