Presentation by Ilya Gushchin: "Metaphysics in the Philosophy of Mathematics and Epistemological Consequences for Proof."
On March 21, a seminar "Formal Philosophy" took place, at which Ilya Gushchin (UrFU) gave a presentation titled "Metaphysics in the Philosophy of Mathematics and Epistemological Consequences for Proof."
Abstract
The presentation will examine two alternatives to classical Platonism in the philosophy of mathematics. A common argument in favor of classical Platonism is that adopting it as a metaphysical framework grants a unique epistemological status to mathematical proof, thereby giving mathematics an advantage over other systems of knowledge. The presentation will show that, in fact, classical Platonism creates significant difficulties for proof, while its alternative versions allow these problems to be resolved.
