Viktoria Denisova delivered a talk at the Center for Logic, Epistemology, and the History of Science at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil)

On May 13, Viktoria Denisova presented her talk “Distorted Conditionals: A Relevance-Theoretic Account” at the Center for Logic, Epistemology, and the History of Science at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil).

In her presentation, she proposed a formal-pragmatic model of cognitive distortions, in which distorted beliefs are analyzed as conditionals whose “pathology” lies not in logical consequence, but in context selection and the composition of implicit premises. Drawing on Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory, she reconstructed the mechanisms by which a limited cognitive environment makes distorted conditionals appear relevant despite their epistemic imbalance. Special attention was given to how a pragmatic analysis of conditionals (in the spirit of Skovgaard-Olsen and Lassiter) allows for the explication of implicit premises and provides a non-labelling, non-diagnostic description of conditionals containing cognitive distortions in terms of the semantics–pragmatics interface.

The talk was attended by Professors Marcelo Coniglio, Itala D’Ottaviano, and Walter Carnielli, who had previously delivered lectures and presented their work in Moscow.
