Yulia Kopcheva gave a talk "Logical nihilism and universal logic"
On April 1, the 117th meeting of the research seminar “Formal Philosophy” took place.
Abstract
This study is devoted to the relationship between two modern trends in the philosophy of logic: logical nihilism and universal logic. The research is motivated by ongoing discussions between logical monists and pluralists about the nature of logical sequence and the possibility of a universal logical system. The main purpose of the report is to substantiate the thesis that, despite the differences, logical nihilism and universal logic share similar principles, which makes it possible to consider nihilism as part of the program of universal logic.
The paper presents a detailed analysis of the program proposed by J. Russell and other representatives of nihilism have identified their critical requirements for the attitude of following and addressing the phenomena of natural language. At the same time, the concept of J.-I. Bezier's universal logic is considered as an abstract meta-theory designed to describe the meta-properties of various logical systems. Using comparative and problem-theoretic methods, it is demonstrated that both approaches are based on a critique of the universality of classical systems and use a similar apparatus. The study concludes that there is a deep conceptual relationship between these areas, in which the negative results of the universal logic project serve to confirm the arguments of logical nihilists.
